About the Show

Barnum tells the extraordinary true story of Phineas Taylor Barnum, the 19th-century entrepreneur who created “The Greatest Show on Earth.” From his first attraction—Joice Heth, advertised as George Washington’s 161-year-old nurse—to his partnership with the diminutive General Tom Thumb, to his complicated relationship with opera singer Jenny Lind, Barnum’s life was a whirlwind of ambition, spectacle, and showmanship.

Hand-in-hand with his devoted wife Charity, Barnum schemes and dreams his way from humble beginnings to international fame, always believing that “there’s a sucker born every minute” but that the public deserves to be amazed.

The Historic Tightrope Walk

When Barnum first played the London Palladium in 1981, Michael Crawford made theatrical history with a nightly tightrope walk across the stage—performed while singing. Now, Lee Mead recreates this iconic moment at Palace Theatre Manchester, walking the high wire suspended above the stage in one of musical theatre’s most daring feats.

“Barnum is a dream role that combines everything I love about musical theatre – incredible songs, high energy, and the chance to learn real circus skills. Following in Michael Crawford’s footsteps is both thrilling and terrifying!”

— Lee Mead

Meet the Cast

Lee Mead as P.T. Barnum

Manchester audiences will recognise Lee Mead from his award-winning performances across the West End and television. After winning BBC’s Any Dream Will Do, Lee starred as Joseph at the London Palladium and has since appeared in Wicked, Legally Blonde, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Television credits include Casualty and Holby City.

For Barnum, Lee underwent months of intensive circus training to master the tightrope walk, juggling, and various acrobatic skills required for the role. This is musical theatre at its most physically demanding—and most spectacular.
