Finding the right car park can make or break your theatre trip. Arrive stressed and late, or relaxed and ready for the show? This guide covers the best parking options for both Palace Theatre and Opera House Manchester, including discounts that could save you over £10 on your evening out.
Browse What’s on at the Theatre
Both theatres are ATG venues in Manchester city centre, but they’re in different locations – so the best car park depends on which theatre you’re visiting. We’ve done the legwork so you don’t have to circle the one-way system wondering where to go.
Parking for Palace Theatre Manchester
Palace Theatre sits on Oxford Street, with Oxford Road train station directly opposite. The road outside the theatre is buses and taxis only, so don’t be tempted to drive past the front entrance – you’ll get a ticket.
Best Car Parks for Palace Theatre
NCP Manchester Palace – The closest option, literally a one-minute walk from the theatre entrance. This multi-storey car park has 411 spaces including 4 disabled bays. It’s popular with theatregoers, so expect queues when leaving after the show. Postcode for sat nav: M1 6NE
NCP Oxford Street – Two minutes’ walk, slightly wider bays than the Palace car park (better for larger vehicles). 443 spaces including 9 disabled bays. Open 24 hours. Postcode: M1 5EJ
NCP Chester Street – Five minutes’ walk, 220 spaces including 4 disabled bays. Slightly cheaper standard rates than Oxford Street. Postcode: M1 5GE
Q-Park Piazza – Five minutes’ walk, located in Chinatown. Underground car park with 225 spaces including 2 disabled bays and 4 electric vehicle charging points. Good option if you fancy Chinese food before the show. Postcode: M1 4LX
Theatre Parking Discounts for Palace Theatre
Both NCP and Q-Park offer discounted parking for theatregoers:
NCP Discount: £12.95 for 24 hours at participating car parks. Download the NCP app, register your details, and add the SaverID: MancSaver1. This works at NCP Oxford Street and NCP Manchester Palace.
Q-Park Discount: 15% off pre-booked parking when you book through q-park.co.uk/en-gb/atg.
Evening Rates: NCP car parks also offer evening rates – around £10.95 for parking from early evening until midnight. You must use the app and park at the correct car parks to access this rate.
Parking for Opera House Manchester
Opera House is on Quay Street, on the opposite side of the city centre from Palace Theatre. It’s closer to Deansgate and Spinningfields, so the recommended car parks are different.
Best Car Parks for Opera House
NCP Spinningfields – Four minutes’ walk, the most popular choice for Opera House. Large multi-storey with 680 spaces including 35 disabled bays. Evening rate of £11.95 from 5pm to midnight (via app). Postcode: M3 3BE
NCP Great Northern – Five minutes’ walk, 527 spaces including 25 disabled bays. Best value evening rate at just £7.95 from 6pm to midnight (via app) – this is the cheapest theatre parking we’ve found for Opera House. Postcode: M2 5QA
Q-Park Deansgate North – Close to Opera House with ATG discount available. Pre-book through the Q-Park ATG portal for 15% off.
Q-Park First Street – 700 spaces, open 24/7. Good option if you’re combining theatre with dinner in the First Street development.
Theatre Parking Discounts for Opera House
NCP Discount: Same deal as Palace Theatre – £12.95 for 24 hours using SaverID: MancSaver1 in the NCP app. Works at NCP Spinningfields and NCP Great Northern.
Q-Park Discount: 15% off pre-booked parking at q-park.co.uk/en-gb/atg.
Cloakroom Validation: Some sources mention bringing your car park ticket to the theatre cloakroom for validation and discounted rates – worth asking at the venue if you’ve forgotten to pre-book.
How NCP Digital Parking Works
NCP car parks now use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) – no tickets or barriers in most locations. Here’s how it works:
- Drive in – cameras read your number plate automatically
- Enjoy the show
- Drive out – cameras record your exit time
- Pay online within 24 hours – visit the NCP website, enter your registration, and your parking session appears with the amount due
If you’ve registered the NCP app with your car details and SaverID, the discount should apply automatically. No queuing at payment machines, no fumbling for change – just drive home and pay when you get there.
Standard Car Park Prices (Without Discounts)
If you don’t use the theatre discounts, expect to pay significantly more. Standard NCP rates in Manchester city centre are roughly (as at January 2026):
- 1 hour: £3.95
- 2 hours: £7.50
- 3 hours: £11.50
- 5+ hours: £23.95
A typical theatre visit of 4-5 hours could cost over £20 without discounts. Using the MancSaver1 code or evening rates brings this down to around £8-£13 – a saving of £10 or more.
Free and Cheap Parking Options
On-Street Parking (Free After 8pm)
Manchester city centre on-street parking is free after 8pm and before 8am the following day. If you’re attending an evening performance and can find a space after 8pm, you won’t pay a penny. However, spaces are limited and you’ll need to arrive early to secure one.
On-street charges apply Monday to Sunday, 8am to 8pm. No charges on bank holidays.
Chepstow Street Car Park
A small council-run car park near Oxford Street NCP with around 14 spaces. Charges are £5.50 for up to two hours or £8.50 for up to four hours. Free for blue badge holders. Card payment only.
New Wakefield Street (SIP Car Park)
A short walk from Palace Theatre, charged from £1.50 for one hour up to £12 for 24 hours – one of the cheaper options. However, reviews mention a narrow entrance and some reports of break-ins, so keep valuables out of sight.
Blue Badge Parking
Blue badge holders have several free parking options in Manchester:
- On-street: Free parking with no time limit at any pay and display bay or designated accessible bay. Display your blue badge and parking clock.
- Yellow lines: Park for up to 3 hours on single or double yellow lines where there are no loading restrictions. Set your clock to show arrival time.
- Dedicated bays: Look for marked disabled bays around Oxford Street, Whitworth Street, and opposite Opera House.
Near Palace Theatre: NCP Oxford Street has 9 disabled bays, NCP Manchester Palace has 4 disabled bays, Q-Park Piazza has 2 disabled bays. The theatre itself has two bays near the stage door/bar entrance, though these fill up quickly.
Near Opera House: NCP Spinningfields has 35 disabled bays, NCP Great Northern has 25 disabled bays. There are also on-street accessible bays on streets opposite the Opera House.
Electric Vehicle Charging
If you’re driving an electric vehicle, Q-Park Piazza has 4 EV charging points – the closest charging option to Palace Theatre. Q-Park also has 24 charging points across 5 of their Manchester car parks.
Tips for Stress-Free Theatre Parking
Pre-book if possible: Both NCP and Q-Park offer pre-booking online, often at discounted rates. Guarantees you a space on busy show nights.
Set up the NCP app before you go: Register your car details and add the SaverID (MancSaver1) so discounts apply automatically.
Allow extra time: City centre traffic and one-way systems can add time to your journey. Aim to arrive 30-45 minutes before curtain up.
Don’t drive down Oxford Street: The road directly outside Palace Theatre is buses and taxis only. Access Oxford Street NCP from the back via Lower Mosley Street or Windmill Street.
Consider leaving 5 minutes early: If you’re parked in a popular theatre car park, leaving just before the final curtain call means you’ll beat the queues and be on your way home while everyone else is still shuffling to the exit.
Check postcode before setting off: Put the car park postcode in your sat nav, not the theatre address. The theatre postcode might take you to the front entrance where you can’t park.
